Sweetener, Ariana Grande's 4th studio album, was sort of a departure from her typical sound, but at the same time a more grown-up version of some of her previos work, like Yours Truly. With Sweetener, Ariana wanted to tap more into her fondness for R&B, and recruited producer Pharrell to help make it happen, resulting in hits like R.E.M, successful, get well soon, the controversial the light is coming, and several others. She also teamed up with longtime collaborators Max Martin and Ilya for some of her singles, including God is a Woman and no tears left to cry. Aside from heading in a new direction with her music, in Sweetener, Ariana expresses her struggles with grief and heartbreak, calling 2018, the year of Sweetener, both the best and worst year of her life.
