Moved by the plight of the millions of this country for whom affordable healthcare is a distant dream, Sri Sathya Sai Baba announced on 23rd November 1990 that, in a years time, He would set up a hospital where expensive surgeries of the heart would be done free.
On 9th September 1991, Sri Sathya Sai Medical Trust came into being. On 22nd November 1991, exactly as He had declared, Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Prasanthigram was inaugurated heralding a new age in healthcare. The hospital came up in a rural setting signalling His intentions that the hospital was to benefit the poor of this country for whom affordable healthcare is a faraway dream.
