(28 Mar 2017) Heads of state and representatives of 22 Arab League members arrived in Amman on Tuesday ahead of the 28th session of the Arab League summit that will take place on Wednesday.
Jordanian King Abdullah II received the leaders on the airport tarmac, where royal guards saluted the leaders and played the various national anthems.
With an eye toward Washington, leaders of a fractured and conflict-ridden Arab world will hold their annual summit seeking common positions and possible leverage as US President Donald Trump weighs up his approach toward the region.
Key participants include King Salman of Saudi Arabia, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi and President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Staffan de Mistura, the UN and Arab League envoy for Syria, will attend the summit along with US and Russian envoys.
Syria's seat will remain empty.
President Bashar Assad hasn't been invited to an Arab summit since his country was suspended from the 22-member Arab League in late 2011, several months after an uprising against him turned into a civil war.
