Video Hits-1, a sister channel of MTV with both briefly being owned by Warner Communications, launched on Jan. 1, 1985. The intent wasn't to compete with the more pop & rock youth music culture of MTV. VH-1 was created to give a somewhat older, more mature, demographic their own space in the video music world by playing softer music like adult contemporary & R&B. Unfortunately, as time went by, both MTV & VH-1 would veer away from their music formats in favour of reality shows, documentaries, panel shows, & other celebrity-centric programming.
