There were strikes by train drivers, nurses, even gravediggers - and newly-elected Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher vowed to tackle the power of the trade unions.

She was spurred on by a strike here at ITV that began exactly forty years ago tomorrow - and left viewers across the country without their favourite programmes for almost three months!
