Hampi is believed to be the ancient 'Kishkinda' of Ramayana times where the Monkey Kingdon existed. Hampi was the capital city of the Vijayanagara Empire (AD 1336-1565). Hampi still has the ruins of hundreds of temples, forts, and monuments, and due to this, UNESCO has declared it a World Heritage Site.
Vijaya Vithala temple is one of the most important temples found in Hampi, as it marks the highest workmanship indicating the mature Vijayanagara phase of architecture. It has a massive enclosure, with entrance gateways on three sides with lofty gopuras on all four sides. The Vittahala temple is known as Vittaleswara in the inscriptions. The temple was built by Devaraya II (1422-46 AD). However later kings added many new architectural edifices within the complex. Kishnadevaraya (1509-1529 AD) made substantial additions to it. Apart from the main shrine, the temple in the courtyard has a Devi shrine, Kalyana mandapa, utsava mandapa, a hundred pillared mandapa, and the much-famed stone chariot - the Garud shrine in front.
