The Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, briefed the Security Council today (20 May) on the escalating crisis in Gaza. Wennesland expressed deep concern over the stalled negotiations between the parties involved, which aim to secure the release of all hostages held in Gaza and establish a ceasefire to provide relief to the civilian population.

Wennesland highlighted that just two weeks ago, negotiations were taking place in Cairo with the support of Egypt, Qatar, and the United States. However, these talks concluded on 9 May without reaching an agreement. He urged the parties to intensify their efforts and return to the negotiating table immediately and in good faith.

Since the start of operations in early May, Wennesland reported that more than 800,000 people have been displaced from Rafah to Mawasi, Khan Younis, and Deir al Balah due to daily IDF airstrikes in Rafah, resulting in the deaths of dozens of Palestinians. Concurrently, Hamas has continued to launch rockets indiscriminately from Gaza towards Israel.

These events have significantly impacted humanitarian operations and access. The expanded humanitarian area in al-Mawasi is suffering from inadequate shelter, food, water, and sewage infrastructure. Additionally, crossings for the entry of humanitarian goods have been directly affected.

Wennesland expressed profound concern that the current trajectory, including the potential for a larger-scale operation, will further hinder efforts to increase the entry of humanitarian goods and ensure their safe distribution to the desperate civilian population.
