"I'll Never Play Craps Again" This classic rebetiko song laments the losses suffered in shooting dice, and vowing never to gamble again. The performance by Bebis Stergiou
is from an album recorded in 1960 called Greek Town USA. It featured Greek musicians and singers who were performing in the Greek nightclubs along 8th Avenue and 29th Street at that time.
Dimitris "Bebis" Stergiou was born in Piraeus in 1927. He received an education in Byzantine and Classical music. He fell under the spell of the bouzoukee, and became obsessed with mastering it. He became good friends with the great Manolis Xiotis, and was influenced by his unusual dexterity and speed with the instrument. He came to the U.S. and worked in New York in the late 1950's. Stergiou was considered by his peers to be among the greatest bouzoukee players of the golden age of Greek popular music. The "life" he was mesmerized by took its toll on him and he died he died in 1972 at the early age of 45 from alcoholism.
His great bouzoukee and vocal rendition of "Den Ksana Paizo Zaria Pia" is one of the few recordings he made and a legacy to Sterghiou's talent.
