If you were a fan of the Police Quest series, you might've wondered what happened to Jim Walls after he split from Sierra in the middle of Police Quest 3's development (   • Police Quest III: The Kindred (PC) Playthr...  ). Looking at this video, you might also be wondering why Blue Force looks so much like a Police Quest game.

As it turns out, Blue Force wasn't merely the product of a company looking to glom onto Sierra's success. While Daryl Gates was collaborating with Sierra on Police Quest IV: Open Season (   • Police Quest: Open Season (PC) Playthrough  ), Jim Walls had partnered up with Tsunami - a company founded in 1991 by ex-Sierra employees - to create a legitimate (but unofficial) follow-up to PQ3.

Blue Force stars Jake Ryan, a newbie cop who has joined the Jackson Beach PD ten years after his parents were murdered during a home invasion, and he hopes to bring their killer to justice.

On the surface, the game has a lot in common with PQ3 and 4: it's a point-and-click adventure game with digitized graphics, inventory-based puzzles, and a penchant for drama. Jim Walls was back! ...but Blue Force makes plain that he was not the secret sauce that turned the first three PQ titles into such classics.

It looks like a PQ game, but Blue Force lacks everything that made the Sierra games special. The story is an incompetently written, disjointed piece of fan-fiction with the depth of a teaspoon; the puzzle design comes across as an afterthought; the world is a lifeless collection of backdrops that offer little in the way of interactivity; and the game is incredibly short. The graphics are nice, but they can't compete with Sierra's games of the time.

Blue Force is an entertaining game for all the wrong reasons, but at least the soundtrack is good.

Sierra's track record was hardly perfect, but their games always maintained a baseline level of quality, and Blue Force falls well below that mark. It's good for a laugh, but I doubt that the handful of people who paid $65 for it back in 1993 were impressed by the experience.
