Specifically, if a cheque drawn for debt or liability is returned unpaid, the drawer (the person who issued the cheque) can face legal consequences. The payee (the person to whom the cheque is issued) must demand payment within 30 days of receiving notice of the dishonor, and the drawer must fail to make payment within 15 days of receiving the notice.
