How 600 conquistadors defeated 20,000 Aztec warriors. You see, after being forced to flee from the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, Cortes and his roughly 600 conquistadors, along with about 800 native allies, were on the run. With their forces weakened, supplies depleted, and morale at its lowest, Cortés and his forces found themselves pursued by a massive Aztec army. However, Cortes knew his cavalry and ranged weaponry would be absolutely devastating on the wide-open flat ground at Otumba. So as the Aztecs tried to overwhelm the Spanish with sheer numbers, Cortes organized his musketeers and crossbowmen into defensive formations, which cut down scores of warriors. While his small but effective cavalry force cut through even more. Even with superior tactics and weaponry, however, there were still simply too many enemies, so Cortes personally led a bold cavalry charge straight through the enemy in order to strike down the Aztec commander. The sudden loss of their leader broke the Aztecs formation and morale, leading them to retreat in chaos. Allowing the Spanish to escape and regroup with more allies.
