NICU Nurse Day in the Life | Registered Nurse RN

The day in the life of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurse can be many things, and "boring" isn't one of them. Some people think that NICU nurses just "cuddle and feed babies," and that's the furthest from the truth. NICU nurses take care of the most vulnerable patient population, and as a Registered Nurse (RN), I'm very proud to call myself a NICU nurse.

I do remember, though, in my early years as a NICU nurse... I did think to myself (for a second) "It's just a baby. How hard could this be?"

Well, this last weekend, I overheard a NICU nurse say, "That baby kicked my ass!" and it reminded me of the many times I said the exact same thing. The were, of course, referring to a patient that was so much work that they barely had time to go pee.

It's during these assignments that you find yourself saying, "What in the WORLD is going ON???" multiples times.

I have no doubt that there's a version of these sayings for every Registered Nurse, in every unit. Not just NICU.

We go home exhausted, tempted to call off the next day... and do we? Have you ever called off the next day just to avoid the slightest chance of getting the same assignment back?
