On March 24th, 1989, the Exxon Valdex supertanker struck the Prince William Sound’s Bligh Reef spilling 10.8 million gallons of crude oil. This event had a profound impact on Chad Lore, a Wyoming native, who originally wrote this song in response to that event. Over the years, however, the song has evolved into a powerful metaphor of freedom – or lack thereof. It asks the question of all of us, “What is it that keeps you from taking flight? What is it that keeps you on the ground? A bad relationship? Anxiety? Addiction? What is the crude oil ruining your wings?”
