Lawmakers in the European Parliament voted to pause work on a major trade pact with the United States, citing objections to President Trump's insistence on acquiring Greenland along with his pledges to impose tariffs on resistant allies. This agreement, finalized in late July 2025 during talks in Turnberry, Scotland, sought to slash numerous EU tariffs on American products—including maintaining duty-free access for US lobsters, a concession dating back to 2020—while capping US duties at 15% overall. Although the EU faced demands to eliminate most import barriers, parliamentarians had signaled tentative support earlier, proposing safeguards like an 18-month expiration and protections against import floods.
