Hashim Abdul Rahman or better known as Che Hashim is one of the few boat builders that’s left in Pulau Duyong, Terengganu.

Pulau Duyong (Mermaid Island) is the home of Malaysia’s world famous traditional boat builders. They are known for their remarkable craftsmanship and immaculate details. They specialize in boats ranging from row boats, deep-sea fishing boats and luxury yachts.

Not only do they work with only photographic memory without any blueprints, they are also able to built the structures without using a single nail. The Cengal hardwood that they prefer to use can last hundreds of years, making their boats sturdy sought after.

This is what makes the Pulau Duyong boat builders outstanding.

Che Hashim has been building boats for the past 30 years. He learnt the art of boat making by observing his seniors and being their apprentice.

Today, there aren’t nearly as many traditional boat builders to continue the legacy but Che Hashim is still hopeful.
