In 1901, both England and America were experiencing significant social and cultural transitions as the Victorian era gave way to the Edwardian period, creating distinct patterns in dress and speech that reflected class divisions and evolving social norms.
Fashion and Dress
Upper-class men in both countries wore formal three-piece suits with high starched collars, silk ties, and bowler hats or top hats for formal occasions. Their clothing emphasized respectability and conformity, with dark colors like black, navy, and charcoal being predominant. Women's fashion was characterized by the iconic S-curve silhouette created by tightly laced corsets, emphasizing a tiny waist and full bust. They wore floor-length skirts, high-necked blouses with puffy sleeves, and elaborate hats adorned with feathers, flowers, or ribbons. The wealthy displayed their status through expensive fabrics like silk, velvet, and fine wool, often imported from Europe.
Working-class attire was markedly different and practical. Men wore simpler suits in coarser fabrics, often with vests and cloth caps instead of formal hats. Women of the working class wore simpler dresses in darker colors that wouldn't show dirt easily, often made from cotton or wool. Their clothing was designed for durability and functionality rather than fashion, with shorter skirts for easier movement during work.

The English maintained strict class-based speech patterns, with the upper classes speaking what would become known as Received Pronunciation, characterized by precise enunciation and specific vowel sounds. Regional accents were strongly associated with lower social classes, and there was significant pressure to modify one's speech to advance socially. Formal address was paramount, with extensive use of titles and proper forms of address even among acquaintances.
American speech in 1901 was more fluid but still reflected regional and class differences. The East Coast elite attempted to emulate British speech patterns, while the expanding West developed its own linguistic character. Americans were generally less formal than their English counterparts but still maintained strict social hierarchies in their language use. Both countries employed elaborate and flowery language in formal settings, with lengthy, complex sentences being considered a mark of education and refinement.

The period marked a time of increasing social mobility and changing gender roles, though these changes were gradual and met with resistance. Women were beginning to enter the workforce in greater numbers, though they were still expected to maintain strict standards of propriety in both dress and speech. The rise of department stores and ready-made clothing was beginning to democratize fashion, though custom tailoring remained the province of the wealthy.
