Indications for NG Tube Insertion:
• Decompression of the stomach (e.g., bowel obstruction)
• Enteral feeding (for patients unable to eat by mouth)
• Gastric lavage (e.g., overdose or poisoning)
• Medication administration (when oral route is not viable)


NG Tube Insertion Procedure:
1. Gather Supplies:
• NG tube (usually 14–18 French for adults)
• Water-soluble lubricant
• Gloves, gown, and face shield
• 60 mL syringe
• pH testing strips
• Tape or fixation device
• Cup of water with straw (if patient is alert)
2. Prep the Patient:
• Explain the procedure 👩‍⚕️
• Position patient in high Fowler’s (90°)
• Measure the tube: Tip of nose → earlobe → xiphoid process. Mark the length.
3. Insertion:
• Lubricate tube
• Insert through the nostril gently, aiming down and back
• Ask the patient to swallow or sip water as you advance
• Continue until marked length is reached
4. Secure the Tube:
• Tape it in place or use a nasal bridle

✅ 1. Check Gastric pH:
• Aspirate small stomach contents with syringe
• Test on pH strip: A pH of 1–5 indicates gastric placement 🧪

✅ 2. X-Ray Verification:
• GOLD STANDARD 📸
• Always confirm via x-ray before using tube for feedings or medications

⚠️ Never rely solely on auscultation (air bolus method)—it’s no longer recommended by evidence-based guidelines.
