Today I am back with another video on Dynamic Host configuration protocol DHCP. I will be explaining what is DHCP? Functions of DHCP, need of DHCP , DHCP operations and finally at the end I will show you how we can use DHCP in real environment in home router and in simulation environment in Cisco Packet tracer
So, lets get started,
Every device that needs to connect to the Network or the Internet must have an IP address value that helps the device to get the unique identity and perform all the operations properly. When the device moves from one network to another network or subnet, the IP address values keeps on changing. In that case DHCP is the service that helps to assign dynamic IP address to all the device in the network. DHCP generally uses router for creating the IP address pool to assign to its host but we can use server also.
DHCP uses port 67 to connect to server and port 68 to connect to the client or host or the device to which the IP needs to be assigned. DHCP runs on the user datagram protocol that means it uses connectionless approach. The ip address given by the DHCP service is known as Dynamic ip asssigment, whereas if we manually type the ip into the host , then it called as static ip assignment
Now lets discuss on detail how a dhcp works,
DHCP works on four steps. Discovery, offer , request and Acknowledgement. IT is also called as DORA. IT is also the name of a famous cartoon character.
DHCP starts when The DHCP client broadcasts a DHCPDISCOVER message on the network subnet using the destination address 255.255.255.255 (limited broadcast) or the specific subnet broadcast address (directed broadcast). This is done to identify the device on the own network or another network who is providing DHCP service.
When a DHCP server which is particulary router receives a DHCPDISCOVER message from a client, which is an IP address lease request, the DHCP server reserves an IP address for the client and makes a lease offer by sending a DHCPOFFER message to the client. This message contains the client's client id (traditionally a MAC address), the IP address that the server is offering, the subnet mask, the lease duration, and the IP address of the DHCP server making the offer.
In response to the DHCP offer, the client replies with a DHCPREQUEST message, broadcast to the server,[a] requesting the offered address. A client can receive DHCP offers from multiple servers, but it will accept only one DHCP offer.
When the DHCP server receives the DHCPREQUEST message from the client, the configuration process enters its final phase. The acknowledgement phase involves sending a DHCPACK packet to the client. This packet includes the lease duration and any other configuration information that the client might have requested. At this point, the IP configuration process is completed.

This is the steps of DHCP operations.
Now lets look at the practical implementation.
1. first we will see the Configuration of DHCP using Server in Packet tracer
2. secondly we will see the Configuration of DHCP using cisco Router in Packet Tracer
3. at last we will check the dhcp configuration on our real home network.
