Training a Bird Dog - Restrained Chase Drill for Pointing Dogs by George Hickox

Training a bird dog, specifically a pointing dog, requires that your dog learns that when the hunter gets in front of them it results in a bird and there may be other birds in the area. The Restrained Chase Drill, developed by George Hickox, is a hunting dog training method that involves using a check cord to physically restrain the dog while it attempts to chase a live pigeon launched from a bird launcher. The dog is then brought back to the scent area and another bird is launched. The dog quickly learns that it's not wise to leave the area he originally located the bird, which in turn, helps to develop a dog that is steady to wing and shot.

The Restrained Chase Drill can be a useful bird dog training tool for any pointing dog, but it is especially useful for young or inexperienced bird dogs that may not have the self-control and focus needed to maintain their point. It is also a good drill for handlers who want to improve their communication and teamwork with their gun dog.
