Detained at the Border

On August 14, 2024, while filming our documentary at the border wall in Arizona, the film crew was pulled over by border patrol, and David Damian Figueroa and I were detained in the back of the border patrol vehicle, being accused of crossing the border illegally or transporting migrants. Although I am now a US citizen, it was a terrifying experience. As I was sitting in that truck in the desert heat being detained, it brought back all the trauma of my border crossing when I was nine years old.

Going to the border is a traumatic experience for me, but I go to help migrants/asylum seekers, to document, to bear witness, to remember where I come from.

We must not look away from the devastation and suffering happening at the southern border.
