SpaceX and the California Coastal Commission have clashed for years, but recent events have given SpaceX an advantage. In October 2024, SpaceX took legal action against the California Coastal Commission , claiming the agency was exceeding its powers by demanding a coastal development permit for rocket launches. SpaceX argued that launches linked to national security fall under federal authority, not state control, and should bypass state permitting.
The conflict began when the U.S. Air Force authorized up to 50 annual launches from Vandenberg. SpaceX further alleged that the California Coastal Commission showed bias against Elon Musk, saying his personal opinions influenced their decisions. In March 2025, a federal judge dismissed the case, reasoning that SpaceX had not shown real harm since launches continued despite California Coastal Commission opposition. The court also pointed out that because the Air Force manages the base and kept approving launches, the California Coastal Commission’s resistance was not actually stopping operations.
