In short, the entire process begins in melanocytes, cells that produce melanin.
All this pigment accumulates in small pockets, known as melanosomes, which transport this pigment to the keratinocytes on the surface of the skin, giving the color we know.
Melanin is subdivided into two types: eumelanin (black/brown pigment) or pheomelanin (red/yellow pigment).
The proportion of concentrations of each of them is responsible for the phototype (coloring) of each person.
A curiosity about black skin: Those who think that people with black skin have more cells that produce melanin are very mistaken.
This is a myth. We have the same number of melanocytes. The difference is the degree of activity. This means that the melanocyte in black skin acts more, produces greater quantities and the melanosomes (little bags that carry the pigment) are larger.
