The first edition of the competition was held in 1950 in Argentina and the latest edition was held in China in 2019. In 2023 the next edition of the FIBA world cup will be jointly hosted by Philippines, Japan & Indonesia. The co-hosts Japan and Philippines are automatically qualified for the next world cup and other teams are to be selected from the FIBA world cup 2023 qualifiers. FIBA was requested the other co-host Indonesia to be competitive in 2021 to be qualified to the world cup. But they were failed to do so. When it comes to the champions and top teams United States, Yugoslavia, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, France, Chile, Japan, China, Korea, Philippines, Cuba, Italy, Puerto Rico, Greece, Croatia, Serbia, Russia, Germany, New Zealand, Turkey, Lithuania & Australia had proven to be the best performers. The Naismith Trophy will be given to the champions.
