John Mayer Silver Sky vs. Custom Shop Strat

Hey guys!

So I happened to be in Camden, and thought I'd pop by to say hello to my friend Taylor who works at Guitar Guitar, there. And - lo and behold - they had a PRS Silver Sky in stock, on their wall. Quite a rare thing, as the demand has been so high for these guitars, that seeing one in person, hanging on a shop wall, is - currently - quite a rare thing in the UK.

Anyway, I jumped at the chance to play it, and thought I'd pick a comparable example of the original to compare it against. So I went for a Custom Shop '60s-spec Strat, with a similar neck profile, slightly skinnier frets etc. It was the closest Fender to the Silver Sky that they had in stock, that day, and priced around the same.

I'm afraid it's just a phone recording, but here are the two guitars - with plenty of 'Slow Dancing In a Burning Room' nods - played through an old Fender Twin. Both guitars are great, and both a little different.

My comments would be the Silver Sky was noticeably more mid-scooped in terms of overall tonal character, and the output of its pickups was honestly close to double that of the Strat. This thing is LOUD for a single-coil-equipped guitar! I enjoyed both, but there is a clear winner in my mind, when it comes to what I would expect for a Strat. What's your opinion?
