Dialogic reading, or shared reading, is having a conversation with your child about a book. Instead of reading a book to your child, let them tell a story about a picture in the book.

Shared reading allows your child to practice their language. Pick a book with a lot of pictures. It doesn’t need to have a lot of words, or even any words. Then snuggle up together and let your child be the story teller. Comment on the picture: “Look at the brown bunny.” Ask questions: “What is the bunny doing?” Wait for your child to respond. If he doesn’t answer, respond: “He’s eating a carrot.” What color is the carrot?” Your child makes connections between words and the picture, and then can practice using words to tell about the picture. Doing shared reading just a few minutes with your child each day, is the best guarantee that he’ll do well in school.
