Battle of Kursk (codename given by Germany: Unternehmen Zitadelle / Operation Citadel), World War II. It was the general offensive launched by German forces against the Kursk salient on the Eastern Front during World War II in July and August 1943. II. One of the largest tank battles during World War II and the air clashes with the highest number of casualties in one day took place in this battle. It was the last strategic offensive of the Germans on the Eastern Front. The resulting Soviet victory gave the Soviets the initiative on the Eastern Front and remained so until the end of the war.

The "Kursk Salient" was formed as a result of the Soviet offensive and German counter-offensive following the German defeat at Stalingrad. The Germans hoped to shorten the front by cutting off the salient from the northern and southern flanks and achieve another major victory by encircling the Red Army units, but the Soviets had good intelligence about Hitler's plans. On the other hand, the Germans were constantly postponing the attack, waiting for new weapons, especially the Tiger I and Panther tanks. Both the intelligence information obtained and these repeated delays gave the Red Army time to organize the details of a phased defense and mount large reserves for a strategic counter-offensive.
