U-S President Bill Clinton and his wife, Senator-elect Hillary Rodham Clinton, are reportedly close to buying a 3.5 (m) million U-S dollar six-bedroom, brick Colonial-style house near the Embassy Row area of Washington, DC.

A contract could be signed as early as Friday, according to a White House spokesman.

The new house's bright red door was adorned with a Christmas wreath on Thursday night, but less welcoming were the "no trespassing" signs dotting the small front lawn, and a police officer sat outside in a patrol car.

The Dutch colonial style home has 7 and a half bathrooms, and features include two fireplaces, a pool and exercise room, and a garage, according to the estate agent's listing.

It sits in grounds of a third of an acre at the end of a secluded cul-de-sac, within easy reach of the vice president's official residence, and near the Brazilian, Danish and Italian embassies.

Last year, the Clintons bought a five-bedroom home in Chappaqua, New York state, at a cost of 1.7 (m) million U-S dollars allowing the first lady to set up residency in the state and launch what became a successful bid to succeed Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

President Clinton is expected to commute from the home to office space in Manhattan once he leaves office next month.

The Clintons have lived in public housing for 20 of the past 22 years - 12 years when Clinton was governor of Arkansas and the past eight as president.

As an ex-president, Clinton will get a 157- thousand U-S dollar annual pension, but his earning potential as a lecturer, writer and corporate director is likely to be far greater.

Hillary Rodham Clinton will earn 145-thousand U-S dollars a year as a senator when she is sworn in on January 3.

They owe millions of dollars in legal fees, mostly as a result of the Whitewater and Monica Lewinsky investigations.
