The actor Joel Grey set a very high standard for the Emcee in Cabaret, on Broadway and via Bob Fosse's film version, that subsequent productions of the musical have tried– and failed – to overcome. Instead of casting younger and younger actors in the part, producers should go the other way and cast someone who WOULD have been an Emcee in Weimar era Berlin: a seasoned authority of the stage.
