This video is about my visit to one of the most beautiful offbeat places in Ladakh - Sumur Sand Dunes in Nubra Valley. Sumur(Ladakh) is a small village located at an elevation of 10,157 feet and it rests along the Nubra River. Sumur is known to be an amazingly picturesque village with vast expanses of green fields that reach up till the valley parapets. As a matter of fact, it is the largest village in the Nubra Valley and is known to have quite a decent assortment of tourist attractions to offer to the visitors that include the Sumur Sand Dunes, Samstanling, Sumur and Charu monsteries. Sumur also provides you with a number of decent accomodation options to choose from which are better than the overcrowded options at Hunder and Diskit. Sumur is also known to be a good base to explore the Panamik hot springs.

Sumur is located at a distance of about 35 kms from the most famous tourist destination of Nubra Valley i.e., Hunder Sand Dunes. The approach road is in a good condition and you can easily cover this distance in 45-50 minutes. So, now we can say that Nubra Valley tour is incomplete without Sumur.

Nubra, also known as Dumra, is a well known historical region of Ladakh, which is currently administered as a subdivision and a tehsil in the Leh district. Its inhabited areas are known to form a tri-armed valley that are cut by the Nubra and Shyok rivers. Its Tibetan name Dumra means a "valley of flowers". BJP has given a hint at creation of Nubra as a new district. Diskit, which is the headquarters of Nubra, is around 120 km north from Leh, the capital of Ladakh.

The Shyok River is known to meet the Nubra River (or Siachan River) and it forms a large valley which separates the Ladakh and Karakoram Ranges. The Shyok river is known to be a tributary of the Indus river. The average altitude of the Nubra valley is over 10,000 feet (3,000 m) above the sea level. The most convenient way to get to this valley is to travel via Khardung La pass from Leh.

Foreign citizens are required to get a Protected area permit for visiting Nubra. Since 1 April 2017 Indian citizens also need to get an Inner Line Permit to visit the Valley.

Nubra (Tibetan: ནུབ་ར, Wylie: nub ra, THL: nup ra) means "western" in Ladakhi, thus it refers to the "western valley", perhaps it distinguishes from the eastern Shyok river valley, which is known to be thinly populated. The traditional name of Nubra region is Dumra which means the "valley of flowers".

Diskit town in the Nubra valley is known to become the congregation centre for people of the region. Diskit is also headquarters of Nubra and thus it has a lot of government offices with quite basic facilities. It is very well connected by road with Leh.

Along the Nubra or Siachan River lie some of the popular villages namely Sumur, Kyagar (called Tiger Hill by the Indian Army), Tirith, Panamik, Turtuk and a few others.
