The Kamakhya Temple in Assam, India, is steeped in legend and mythology:

Origin
According to Kalika Purana, the temple is located where Sati's yoni (genitals and womb) fell after Shiva's dance of destruction with her corpse. The Yogini Tantra, however, associates Kamakhya with the goddess Kali and emphasizes the creative symbolism of the yoni.

Kamdev's penance
According to legend, Kamdev, the God of love, went in search of the fallen parts of Sati's body to rid himself of a curse. After finding the parts, the place came to be known as Kamakhya.

The Koch Bihar royal family
According to legend, the Goddess Kamakhya cursed the Koch Bihar royal family, prohibiting them from offering prayers at the temple. Even today, the descendants of that family do not visit the temple or look upward towards the Kamakhya Hill.

The structure
The temple's structure dates back to the 8th or 9th century, but it has been rebuilt many times since then. Its final hybrid style is called Nilachal.

The Ambubachi Mela
The Ambubachi Mela is held every year to honour the Goddess's periods.
