Jair Bolsonaro has been president of Brazil since 2018. His four-year term has been mired with controversy including over 680,000 Covid-19 deaths, the increased deforestation of the Amazon rainforest, and Bolsonaro's own history of racist, homophobic and sexist remarks.

In October 2022 the right-wing Bolsonaro faces Lula De Silva, leader of the Worker's Party and himself former president of Brazil, in a general election. But Lula himself is not without controversy: he was previously convicted of corruption and sentenced to nine years in prison - though the conviction was overturned and the prosecutor, who became a member of Bolsonaro's cabinet, was found to have not acted impartially.

Jair Bolsonaro's actions and policies have led to comparisons with former US president Donald Trump. In the run-up to the 2022 Brazil election, Bolsonaro has repeatedly gone on record stating that he won't accept a result in which he is not the winner.

In this video, Phil Clarke-Hill explores what the Brazilian election means for Brazil and the world.

Jair Bolsonaro é presidente do Brasil desde 2018.
