Testing the waterproofness of my latest phone, the Doogee S86Pro

Details and review text below:

I own a boat, paddleboards and a jetski so I am always looking for a decent waterproof phone for my travels. Android 10, 8GB ram as much as my work laptop!! And 128gb of storage - as much as most high end phones. But what a battery! Before I even got around to using it in anger, the battery impressed me. I fully charged it, unplugged it before bed. In the morning it still had 100% charge. So I though, wow, lets test this. I left it another day and it was on like 98%. Anyway to cut a long story short, because I was busy with work and already had a working (non-waterproof phone) I decided to leave it to see how long it would take to run out. Not in use to be fair, but on standby. After 2 weeks on standby, it still had 35% charge left. 2 weeks! That would be at least 3 weeks of use on standby. I think you could safely watch a full day of videos and still have enough charge to browse the internet all day the next day and then some. Anyway, I was sold on the battery alone!

I've used it for just over a couple of weeks now properly, as in out on my boat and jetski and these are my first impressions and initial findings:

Firstly, it really is rugged! It's quite heavy, reassuringly so. Heavier than my current phone, but then it is bigger. It's not too heavy, it is fine in a jeans pocket or a jacket pocket, but it might not sit in a small cotton shirt pocket very well. It also isn't just waterproof like some other IP68 phones which are waterproof to a depth of 1m for 30 minutes. This is IP69 so it can withstand "powerful high temperature water jets". Now you might laugh, but if I flipped the jetski at 40mph, that would be cold temperature water jets at least. Either way it demonstrates the build quality I suppose! The case is well armored on the rear, sides and corners. The corners actually have built in bumper protectors as when you drop a phone, 99% of the time it will land with one of the corners touching the ground first. It will almost never land totally flat. The corners are designed to provide impact resistance and protect the phone and the screen from damage. The screen is also hard wearing anyway. So in short, you definitely won't have to worry about dropping the phone, getting it wet or even swimming with it. It will make an ideal GPS navigator for my jetski and boat but would also be ideal for walkers or as a satnav for a biker and you can use it with gloves on as I have tried.

Unlike other rugged phones I've seen or had in the past, this actually comes with a lanyard in the box so you can secure it around your wrist. Not so much to prevent you dropping it on the ground, but in my case, to stop me dropping it off the side of my paddleboard or jetski. I can clip the phone to something for security so if it comes out of its mount, it is tethered and doesn't get lost. It will also let me swim with the phone which I am looking forward to doing later in the summer when I go abroad to Greece.

Perfomance-wise, it is also plenty good enough. The 6.1" screen is nice and vivid when you are watching videos on it. The 8 core Helio P60 processor allows the phone to multitask and there is no lag when flicking between open applications. Gaming seems ok on the phone. I'm only a casual gamer, but the racing games I do like work well enough.

WiFi is very good. It supports both the 2.4GHz band AND the 5GHz band and the antenna or chip is clearly well designed because this phone picks up a stronger signal in remote parts of my house than other devices.

As well as it's 8GB of memory, the phone comes with 128GB of storage which is the same as most flagship phones and twice the storage of my current phone plus you can upgrade it with a micro SD card for more if needed. It'll support dual sim cards if you need that.

Battery life is great as I mentioned above, but then it should be with a 8500mah battery packed in to a phone weighing 315g (158mm x 78mm x 18mm) I have now managed to get the phone to last all week of normal use before I needed to charge it. A week is brilliant. With really heavy use, it should easily last a few days.

Another killer feature that I always look for in a phone is NFC. I won't buy a phone without NFC as I use Android Pay all the time. Luckily this phone supports NFC. It has 3 rear cameras, 16mo, 8mp and 2mp and it has an infared thermometer I haven't played with yet as I'd forgot it had it! It also charges via USB-C so nice and fast but also a nice rugged port unlike the fragile micro-usb sockets so often seen a year or more ago.

In summary, if you are an outdoors type: You work on a building site, you go walking, you have a motorbike, you do watersports etc etc, then this is a phone for you. It's built like a birck, has a great battery and is very rugged. It should never break on you.
