Unprecedented chaos engulfs the Netherlands as the Dutch government collapses in the wake of a heated battle over asylum policies. Prime Minister Mark Rutte's resignation shakes the nation, triggering fresh elections and intensifying the divide.

The Dutch government has collapsed due to a disagreement among coalition parties regarding asylum policies, according to Prime Minister Mark Rutte. Despite crisis talks chaired by Rutte, the four parties failed to reach an agreement. Although the government was established a year and a half ago, the parties have long been at odds over migration issues. Reports from local media suggest that fresh elections will likely be held in November.

Rutte's conservative VVD party had sought to restrict the influx of asylum seekers, following a dispute last year over overcrowded migration centers. However, his plans faced opposition from his junior coalition partners. During a news conference on Friday evening, Rutte confirmed the government's collapse after an emergency cabinet meeting. He announced his intention to submit his resignation to King Willem-Alexander on Saturday. Nonetheless, Rutte stated that the ministers would continue their duties as a caretaker cabinet until the new elections.

In the Netherlands, the number of asylum applications increased by over a third last year, surpassing 47,000. Government figures projected approximately 70,000 applications for 2023. This week, Rutte attempted to push through a plan that included a monthly cap of 200 relatives of war refugees allowed entry into the country. However, his junior coalition partners, the Christian Union and the socially liberal D66, strongly opposed this proposal.

Mr. Rutte described the decision to resign as "very difficult" and stated that the differences in views between the coalition partners were "irreconcilable." He acknowledged that all parties made significant efforts to find a solution, but the migration issue proved insurmountable. Even a compromise proposal known as the "emergency brake," which would activate restrictions only in the case of an excessively high influx of migrants, failed to salvage the government.

"The four parties decided that they cannot reach an agreement on migration," said Tim Kuijsten, spokesperson for the Christian Union. "Therefore they decided to end this government."

At 56 years old, Rutte is the country's longest-serving prime minister, having held office since 2010. The current government, which took office in January 2022, represents his fourth coalition. Rutte has faced pressure on migration matters due to the rise of far-right parties like Geert Wilders' PVV.

Following a surprise election victory in March, the Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB) became the largest party in the upper house of parliament. They have now stated that they will not serve in any future government led by Rutte.
