After the Second World War was over Iran was granted independence and democratic elections were held. The elected Mohammad Mosaddegh was overthrown during the 1953 Iranian coup d'état. More dissatisfaction would lead to the Iranian Islamic Revolution. Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was overthrown and his feared police force - the SAVAK - was abolished. Key person was Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. The Iranian Revolution (1978 - 1979) happened in two phases. At some point angry Iranian protesters stormed the American embassy.
