28th January 2019: Finally MIUI 10 with Android 8.1 (Oreo) is officially available for the Xiaomi Redmi 5 smartphones. Just use the system app updater and everything should work fine. If you have the same initial version like me you won't lose your data after the update.

▪ IMPORTANT:

In case you are unsure, backup your data before updating. If you are currently using a MIUI developer version, flashing to a stable version would require wiping all data, otherwise it might cause serious damage to your device.
