I Can Imagine Myself Living in Huam-dong

Seoul's Huam-dong neighborhood was indeed a gem sandwiched between Seoul Station and the hugely popular HBC neighborhood. From the sloop of Mt. Namsan, I walked down Huam's history lane. The neighborhood took off during Japanese colonial times when wealthy Japanese settled in the so-called stand-alone Culture Houses. With little to no development, different layers of housing types started to form around these cultural houses, along with Korean and non-Korean people who managed to create a lovely communal feeling. Differently flavored layers on top of sad colonial history but a strong community is what I felt in Huam. This neighborhood has won a place in the top 10 neighborhoods and imagine myself living here and maybe you do too after watching this video.

서울의 후암동은 서울역과 인기있는 해방촌 동네 사이에 끼워진 보석이었습니다. 남산의 비탈에서부터 시작해 저는 후암동의 역사 길을 따라 내려갔습니다. 이 동네는 일본 식민지 시대에 부유한 일본인들이 소위 '문화 주택'에 들어와 살면서 시작되었습니다. 그 이후 거의, 혹은 전혀 개발되지 않은 상태에서 한국인과 비-한국인들이 함게 모여 다양한 주거 형태가 형성되기 시작했고, 아주 사랑스러운 공동체 사회를 창조했습니다. 슬픈 식민지 역사 위의 다양한 맛의 층이 쌓여있지만, '공동 유대'는 제가 후암동에서 가장 강하게 받은 느낌입니다. 이 동네는 제가 다녀온 동네 10위 안에 들 것 같습니다. 이 영상을 보고 난 뒤 여러분도 이곳에 사는 자신의 모습을 그려보세요!
