Woodland photography can be chaotic.

This is one of my favourite trees in my local woods, yet I’ve always struggled to photograph it in a way that truly does it justice. Surrounded by layers of branches, trunks and undergrowth, it’s a perfect example of how difficult it can be to simplify a woodland scene.

In this video I explore the In The Round technique (sometimes associated with the Pep Ventosa style) to see if it can transform that chaos into something more painterly and intentional.

I’ll show you:
• How I capture the images in the field
• What to consider when walking around your subject
• How I stack and blend the frames in Photoshop
• Why this technique creates such a strong impressionistic effect

What I love about this approach is that it keeps the subject recognisable, while introducing movement, texture and a subtle canvas-like quality that feels closer to painting than traditional photography.
