Whenever an activity or event takes place, Prepositions of Agency and Instrumentality — BY, WITH, THROUGH & AT — connect it to the agent or instrument responsible for its happening. However, these prepositions can be confusing at times, especially BY & WITH. Have a look at these two sentences.
Trees were cut WITH axe.
Trees were cut BY axe.
Many of us, especially non-native speakers, while speaking and writing, use BY and WITH frequently and interchangeably without realising the impact on the sentence with our casual selection of the preposition. Even though the two sentences sound natural, anyone who understands the rules governing the usage of BY & WITH can easily spot the wrong sentence.
When we have to tell how an action is performed or in what manner it is carried out, Prepositions of Method & Manner — BY WITH, LIKE & IN — help us to express ourselves. Again, if we are not aware of the rules governing their usage, confusion prevails. See the two sentences below:
*You can’t change a person BY force.
*You can’t change a person WITH force.
Both the sentences sound natural, but the difference lies in the Prepositions of Method & Manner.
