Shutter island Asylum - Belgium 🇧🇪

Shutter Island is also known as the lost asylum which is an abandoned psychiatric hospital in Belgium.

Some buildings remain in use but there are two buildings which are now derelict.

In the early twenties of the last century there was not enough hospitals for patients with psychiatric illnesses in Belgium.

In 1928 a farm was purchased and within a few months construction work began. The institution for over 800 psychiatric patients opened in 1932.

The complex of buildings and surrounding grounds has a total of 64 hectares.


Shutter island now stands forgotten and slowly rotting away.
