Bathroom Vocabulary in English

Learn some useful expressions and vocabulary related to the bathroom! We discuss verbs and phrasal verbs, common bathroom items and appliances, and polite and not-so-polite bathroom expressions.

Useful Verbs Related to the Bathroom:

1. to drain (water): to remove the water from the sink/tub/etc through a drain

Example: After taking a long bath, I drained the tub of water and rinsed all the the suds off my body.

2. to clog: to block so that something can not pass through

Example: Our young son clogged the toilet with toilet paper. We had to use a plunger to help drain the water.

3. gargle: to move water or another liquid around your mouth in order to clean it

Example: After brushing my teeth, I gargled mouthwash.

4. to rinse off: to wash (something off) with only water

Example: After getting out the pool, I rinsed off all the chlorine at the pool shower.

5. to dry off: to remove water or another liquid from something

Example: After showering at the pool, I dried off and then put on my clothes.

6. to run a bath: let water run into a tub

Example: After getting off work, I like to run a bath and then relax in the sudsy water.

7. to blow dry one’s hands: to remove liquid from hands using a hand dryer

Example: I prefer blowing drying my hands. It is much better for the environment.

8. to flush (a toilet): to clean the toilet by a strong flow of water

Example: My little brother sometimes forgets to flush the toilet after using the bathroom. I hate to see what he leaves behind!

9. to flood: to make water cover an area that is usually dry

Example: Unfortunately, I left the water running in the tub and flooded the whole bathroom!

10. to lather: to make soapy bubbles with water

I make sure to lather my hair well with shampoo to remove all the grease.

Common Names for the Bathroom

1. half bathroom: a bathroom in a home that does not contain a tub or shower.

2. restroom: usually used to refer to a public bathroom

3. men’s or ladies’s room: A male or female public bathroom

4. little boy’s/girls: (informal)

5. porta-potty: a portable toilet

6. outhouse: a small structure outdoors made for relieving oneself

*In the U.S, it is not common to use the word toilet to refer to the bathroom
