Belvedere Palace is one of Vienna’s most iconic Baroque landmarks and one of Austria’s most important cultural sites. Located in the Landstraße district, the Belvedere complex consists of the Upper Belvedere, Lower Belvedere, and beautifully designed Baroque gardens connecting the two palaces.
The palace was built in the early 18th century as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, one of the most famous military commanders of the Habsburg Empire and a great art patron. The complex was designed by architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt and represents the height of Austrian Baroque architecture, combining power, elegance, and perfect symmetry.
After Prince Eugene’s death, the Belvedere became imperial property under Empress Maria Theresa. The Upper Belvedere later opened its doors to the public, making it one of the earliest palace museums in Europe. Today, it houses one of the most important art collections in Austria, featuring over 800 years of art history.
The Belvedere is especially famous for its collection of Austrian art, including masterpieces by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Oskar Kokoschka. Klimt’s world-famous painting “The Kiss” is one of the main highlights and attracts visitors from all over the world.
The palace also played a key role in modern Austrian history. In 1955, the Austrian State Treaty was signed in the Marble Hall of the Upper Belvedere, restoring Austria’s independence after World War II. This moment made Belvedere not only a cultural symbol, but also a national one.
The formal Baroque gardens, arranged on three terraces, connect the Lower and Upper Belvedere with fountains, sculptures, and long visual axes. Together with the palaces, they form part of Vienna’s UNESCO World Heritage–listed historic center.
During the winter season, the palace becomes the backdrop for the Belvedere Christmas Market 2025, also known as the Christmas Village at Belvedere Palace. Set directly in front of the Upper Belvedere, it offers a cozy holiday atmosphere with traditional Austrian food, mulled wine, roasted almonds, and artisan stalls.
