Mae Hong Son Loop Thailand Ep.1: The Highest Point in Thailand?

Hey guys! This is episode 4 of the Thailand series of our backpacking adventure, and episode ONE of our big MAE HONG SON LOOP trip in northern Thailand! If you missed our Sri Lanka series, you can catch up here:    • Backpacking Sri Lanka  

JOIN US as we embark on a 600km loop in northern Thailand, the MAE HONG SON LOOP! A popular motorbike route, there are hundreds of twists, turns and mountain passes that make this such an epic drive!

In this episode we try and obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP), after learning that we should have applied for this back in the UK… Our first day on the loop takes us to Doi Inthanon National Park, home to the highest point in Thailand! We pass through Chom Thong, and visit waterfalls ‘Wachirathan’ and ‘Sirithan’.

Like with any of our videos, things never go to plan and we find ourselves tired, delirious, singing, dancing and wondering, ‘where on Earth is the highest point in Thailand?’ This episode is sure to make you laugh! We also give you our HONEST opinion of the first leg of the Mae Hong Son Loop, which in our case is the road between Chiang Mai and Doi Inthanon (clockwise route). It was our least favourite part of the trip, but it gets better from here on out!



IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

IDP: You MUST obtain an International Driving Permit BEFORE you embark on your travels. After visiting the Department of Land Transport in Chiang Mai (and almost getting kicked out!) we can tell you, first hand, that it is not possible to get a license once you are here. If you have a Thai address/visa other than a tourist visa, you probably can.

Doi Inthanon Entry Fees 2024: 300 TBH per adult, 30 TBH per vehicle

Doi Inthanon Royal Pagodas Entry Fee: 200 THB per adult

Car Hire: £102 for 7 days. We booked it through https://www.orbitcarhire.com
