Darth Plagueis Kills Former King Ars Veruna (Star Wars: Darth Plagueis)

In this excerpt, after the failed assassination attempt on Plagueis, Plagueis visits former King Veruna regarding the failed assassination attempt. Originally, Palpatine had suggested to Plagueis that Maul should take care of Veruna. Plageuis refused and instead wanted to be the one to take of Veruna. Plagueis decided to enter his hideout at night while he was sleeping. Sitting by his side, and speaking to him in oddly comforting tones as if he were a loving patron or caring physician, Damask revealed his true identity as Darth Plagueis to the horrified Veruna. Plagueis then manipulated the limited amount of midi-chlorians in the former monarch's body. Veruna died a slow and painful death as Plagueis drove his life force from his body by midi-chlorian manipulation of a kind that had never before been attempted. Plagueis' last words to Veruna were a declaration that the dark side had anointed him to be his "shepherd," guiding him to death's door, across which threshold, Veruna alone must pass, for Plagueis would then take leave of him, forever.

Veruna's death was so brutal and kinda scary. Don't get me wrong. I love it.
James Luceno goes into detail perfectly when writing this death. I also think that this was the perfect decision to let Plagueis kill Veruna as Plagueis was Veruna's target. If Maul had killed him, it wouldn't be all that interesting.
