YANNIS ANGELOPOULOS

Baritone Yannis Angelopoulos (1881 Athens, 1943 Piraeus) was a very popular singer who possessed one of the greatest voices that have ever been heard on greek lyric stages. Details of his early life and studies are vague but it seems certain that his operatic debut took place in the greek island of Syros in 1906 (as Ourrias in Gounod's "Mireille") and that he was singing in public as late as the year of his death.
Between 1920 and 1923 he sung in Italy. According to his own recollections he sang in Pisa, Brescia, Treviso, Palermo, Florence and Rome. Using the role of Rigoletto as his calling card, he managed to impress the italian public, no small achievement at a time when Ruffo's echoes were still fresh and when Italy was the home base of many first class baritones such as Stracciari, Galeffi, Urbano and Molinari.
His chance for a great international career was lost when he decided to return to Greece due to the unstable political climate in Italy and his objection to Mussolini's attacks on the island of Corfu.
