The ASME A17.1-2019/ Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators (2.13.5.3)
requires that objects and bodies approaching the elevator are detected before
the door fully closes. The safety code stipulates that the elevator sensor
must detect approaching objects up to 500 mm (20 in.) away from the elevator
door. The code also states that these the elevator sensor must detect objects
that are traveling at a speed of up to 1 m/s (3 ft/s).
