Why does the large Leicestershire town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch still have no railway connection? In this episode of my Lost Railway Towns series, we explore the fascinating railway history of Ashby and uncover why this important town was abandoned by the railway industry.

Once a bustling centre of industry, and spa tourism, Ashby was well-connected by the Ivanhoe Line, linking it to Burton, Coalville, and Leicester. But with the Beeching cuts and decades of closures, the town’s direct passenger services vanished. Today, Ashby stands as one of the largest towns in the East Midlands without a railway station — despite years of promises to reopen the Ivanhoe Line.

In this video, we take a look at what Ashby was famous for, the story of its lost railways, and remains of the Burton & Ashby Light Railway. We also examine the long-running campaign to restore the Ivanhoe Line and ask the question: why has nothing happened?
