This is a sonification for the interstellar gas and dust nebula 'The Joker Nebula' (left) (also called the Eastern Veil), a part of the Veil Nebula. The image is made up of 5 different surveys assigned to different colors, including Ultraviolet, Visible and Infrared surveys. The data assigned red color is 22 micron wavelength infrared data taken by Widefield Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), that in yellow color is near Infrared survey (~850 nm wavelength) from the second Digitised Sky Survey (DSS2) produced by the Space Telescope Science Institute, that in green color is visible Red band from DSS2, that in blue color is visible Blue band from DSS2, and that in magenta color is Ultraviolet data taken by GALEX UV Space Telescope. The data was obtained from NASA Skyview virtual telescope archive.

The Sonification includes assigning sounds of different frequencies to different surveys. The Ultraviolet survey was assigned the highest sound frequency of 2500 Hz, and so on to the lowest frequency 200 Hz assigned to the WISE survey.

The (Joker) Nebula gets its name from the popular Batman movie antagonist joker, because of the Joker-face-like structure of the nebula (left). The entire nebula is a region of ionised gas and dust, including the Cygnus loop (right) (also called the Western Veil) which is a supernova remnant expelled from the supernova are well visible in the images. The data in green shows ionised Hydrogen gas from the nebula diffused and expanding in space. The Ultraviolet data shows the outer edge of the Eastern Veil illuminated by young and hot stars and ionised from the incident radiation. Observe how dust and ionised gas from the nebula is not detected in near IR and 22 micron IR surveys, this is because ionised gas and dust radiate energy at specific wavelengths only (spectral line emissions). However, the background stars and galaxies are detected in almost all surveys, since they emit thermally (blackbody radiation - continuous spectrum) as formulated in Planck's law of radiation.

The data has been processed and cleaned to reduce noise or unwanted signals, and enhance the details in the image.
