In this lively Metaphorum 2025 conference session, Paul and Wendy tackle the tricky patterns that can leave even experienced Clean Language facilitators scratching their heads.

This isn't about "bad clients" at all – it's about those wonderfully human moments when facilitation gets messy, and we need practical strategies to stay clean whilst helping our clients find their way forward.

* What Happens in This Session*

The session begins with an introduction to pattern spotting using AI-generated tick sheets that analyse Clean Language sessions. Paul and Wendy show real examples of facilitator patterns – like developing metaphors and exploring sequence – and discuss what these patterns reveal about effective facilitation.

Then comes the main event: an interactive activity where participants experience being both facilitator and "bad client." Some participants are given secret patterns to embody as clients (without revealing what they are), whilst pairs of facilitators work together to spot the pattern and develop strategies for working with it effectively.

You'll watch as facilitators tackle challenging client behaviours in real-time, experiment with different approaches, and receive coaching from Paul and Wendy about what's working and what might work better.

Wendy Sullivan has worked in Clean Language and Symbolic Modelling for over 20 years and is one of the most experienced trainers in the field. She is co-author of Clean Language: Revealing Metaphors and Opening Minds.

Dr Paul Field is a certified Clean Facilitator, Trainer, and Assessor with a decade of experience. He's a speaker at international conferences and innovator of new techniques in Clean Language, including Embodied Clean, The Binds Process, and Persona Modelling.
