At Museum Beetles, we dissect and make timelapse videos of flesh-eating (Dermestes maculatus) bugs cleaning animal carcasses until only the bones remain, and we hope to educate you along the way! This time, it’s an Iguana (Family of Iguanidae), most likely a Spiny-tailed Iguana (Ctenosaura). Subscribe to our channel to follow our journey with different and larger animals.

Iguanas have an extra flap of skin below their neck called the dewlap. This flap can be extended to make them appear larger, signal to rivals or mates, or regulate body temperature by catching sunlight or shade. A long, flexible hyoid bone supports the dewlap and makes this movement possible. Interestingly, humans also have a hyoid bone, but ours is much smaller and shaped differently. It helps anchor muscles for swallowing and speech.
