The origin of the goldendoodle. Around the 90s, it became more and more common to cross the Poodle with various breeds to create hypoallergenic and cute dogs that would also inherit the qualities of the other parents.

Besides the golden retriever , the labrador ( labradoodle ), the cocker spaniel ( cockapoo ) and the yorkshire terrier (yorkipoo) are some of the breeds that are very popular in these famous crosses.

The objective here is to create a larger poodle and to preserve the low loss of hair and «dander» (an organic material produced by the dog’s body and which causes the allergy) of the breed, while recovering the very soft and family nature of the golden.

For now, most dogs born of this union are «first generation» specimens, that is to say they are the fruit of two goldendoodles.

For the moment, no kennel club has officially recognized the breed, but its enormous popularity and the community that is organized around these dogs suggests that it could one day become official and adopt a clearer standard.

The character of the goldendoodle.

In theory, he is endowed with a very tolerant, affectionate and gentle character.

He is loyal, very intelligent and quite active. A «perfect» dog will be very comfortable with children, strangers and other animals.

The goldendoodle could become unmanageable if you don’t have time to bring him outside or if you leave him alone for too long. Loneliness doesn’t sit well with him and he needs a lot of stimulation.

In practice, predicting a goldendoodle’s temperament isn’t as easy as it is for a purebred dog. It can vary greatly given that dogs are bred in a less structured way:

Combined Genetics: By breeding two dogs of different breeds together, it is more difficult to predict which Poodle or Golden Retriever traits will win out. The Golden Retriever Club of Canada describes breeding a poodle with a golden retriever as a » genetic gamble » because the outcome is unpredictable.
Conversely, those who breed only poodles have for generations selected the specimens that best correspond to the «ideal poodle». The recipe is therefore a little more stable.
Lack of standard: As the goldendoodle is not officially recognized, there is no standard that documents the conformity of specimens. This makes life easier for people who wish to become goldendoodle breeders because they do not have to meet specific criteria.
